Dame Anita Roddick The environmental, human rights, and ethical cosmetics worlds are in mourning this week at the passing of Dame Anita Roddick, one of the most prominent campaigners of our times.

Anita was a contributor to the Ecologist, and in 2004 wrote this impassioned article for the magazine, following her experiences of the conditions suffered by workers in the sweatshops of Bangladesh.

The September edition of the Ecologist is on sale. In this issue, we print an exclusive interview with Leonardo di Caprio by Zac Goldsmith, in which the Titanic star reveals how his new film, 11th hour, picks up where Al Gore left off. We also examine the toxic duty of banana plantation workers, the effect of rubbish in our oceans, Rupert Sheldrake’s eco-religion, the disappearance of India’s traditional street food vendors, and how lavender is making a comeback. The Ecologist is available in most WHSmiths stores, and many independent whole food shops and newsagents.
